Color Trends For Spring 2014

If the word “spring” has you thinking of pastels and soft, sweet colors, think again! Spring 2014 makeup trends are all about bold, fresh colors that pop; about sheer nude naturals that flatter, and most importantly, about blending the two to create a look that’s uniquely yours.
The U.S. color matching corporation Pantone is the harbinger of all things color for seasonal palettes. Twice a year, Pantone hosts a meeting in Europe comprised of representatives from color standard groups from around the world. They discuss color direction and inspiration as well as political, world cultural and fashion trends, and make color forecasts. Their “Color of the Year” is the hue in which the global zeitgeist is headed; it’s the color people on Earth want, need, and are ready for in that particular year.
The 2014 Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid:
A combination of fuchsia, purple and pink, Radiant Orchid was chosen for 2014 to “intrigue the eye and spark the imagination,” said Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman. “An invitation to innovation, Radiant Orchid encourages expanded creativity and originality, which is increasingly valued in today’s society.” As a fashion hue, Radiant Orchid is the jumping-off point for the Pantone 2014 palette, which is filled with vibrant brights (seen here) that are balanced with muted pastels and light neutrals.
Muted Pastels: Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, Hemlock
Light Neutrals: Paloma, Sand
Embrace the spirit of the creativity and freethinking that Radiant Orchid inspires — it’s perfect for this time of year! After all, spring makeup is all about experimenting, discovering new looks and freshening up your longtime techniques. Orchid is a gorgeous, feminine color that can be introduced subtly to your spring palette, or splashed on with wild abandon.
We love Aveda’s Culture Clash makeup palette for Spring/Summer 2014. It draws beauty colors from around the world for inspiration, draws shades from urban, tribal, and nature scenery, and is literally all-inclusive. And – you’ll recognize the shades from Pantone’s annual palette. Everyone can find shades and textures in this collection that suit their personal style and enhance their natural coloring:
The looks you can create run the spectrum.
Keep it super natural:
… or balance deeper earth tones with a fierce berry:
or lay on the bold brights over a flawless foundation.
Play with your spring makeup and find your best combinations! Try a nude lip with a full-color smoky eye or create a dramatic statement lip with a subtle contoured eye. Mix and match colors and textures and, above all, have fun. Schedule an appointment with a Douglas J makeup artist for a makeup lesson or application — you will be stunned at the different looks and shades you can pull off. (Think of it as a grownup play date.)
